Heating only yourself instead of the whole room: save up to €500 per winter

A fan heater needs 2,000 watts, a USB heated blanket only 10. If you only warm yourself in the evening, you save significantly. We have recalculated exactly how much – and when it pays off.

Why heat an entire room when you are only sitting on the sofa?

A fan heater warms the air in the entire room – including the corners where no one sits, and the heat that escapes through walls and windows. A heated blanket, on the other hand, brings the heat exactly where you feel it: directly to the body. That is why 10 watts are enough for it.

The comparison: fan heater versus USB heated blanket

Calculation example with an electricity price of €0.35/kWh, each on the highest setting:

Fan heater (2,000 W) USB heated blanket (10 W)
Per hour 2 kWh ≈ €0.70 0.01 kWh ≈ 0.35 cents
Per evening (4 hrs) 8 kWh ≈ €2.80 0.04 kWh ≈ 1.4 cents
Per winter (180 evenings à 4 hrs) 1,440 kWh ≈ €504 7.2 kWh ≈ €2.52

Anyone who has heated for four hours every evening with the fan heater and instead uses the USB heated blanket saves around €500 per winter in this example – which corresponds to about €80 per month. If it is only two hours a day, it is still around €250 per winter.

And what if you heat with central heating?

Even then, the blanket pays off – via the thermostat. According to the German consumer advice center, the rule of thumb is: Every degree less in room temperature reduces consumption by about 6%. According to Heizspiegel 2025, heating a 70 m² apartment with gas costs on average around €1,180 per year. From this results:

  • 1 °C less: approx. €71 per year
  • 2 °C less: approx. €142 per year

With the heated blanket over the shoulders, 19 °C quickly feels like 21 °C – and the blanket only costs cents.

Important: Your rooms should still not be completely cooled down. Heating too little increases the risk of mold. The German Environment Agency recommends up to 20 °C in living areas, 18 °C in the kitchen, and 17 °C in the bedroom – and airing out more frequently in cooler rooms.

Where the USB heated blanket is particularly worth it

  • Home office: warm at the desk, without heating the study room all day.
  • Sofa and reading nook: as a lap blanket or shoulder throw.
  • On the go: with a power bank on the balcony, in the stadium, or while camping – also as a cape via zipper.

Good to know

  • Operation via USB with 5 V – preferably with a power bank or a power supply with 5 V / 2 A.
  • With a 5,000 mAh power bank, the blanket warms for about 1–5 hours depending on the setting.
  • 3 heating levels with digital display, carbon fiber heating wire in 8 heating zones.
  • Washable: remove the cable and put it in the machine in a laundry bag.

Conclusion

Heat where you are – instead of the entire room. Anyone who sits a lot in the evening, works in a home office, or previously reaches for the fan heater saves significantly every winter with a USB heated blanket.

All values are example calculations. The actual savings depend on your electricity and heating price, your apartment, and your usage.
